Have you ever had a launch that flopped, been disappointed by someone you were leaning on, or had a big opportunity fall through?
If so, you’re in good company. Overcoming obstacles and bouncing back from disappointment is an inevitable part of being an entrepreneur.
However, as Dr. Wayne Dyer says, the ability to “look at every obstacle as an opportunity” is what makes some people more successful than others.
In a recent conversation with my Mastermind Client Mandy Barbee, a leading hypnotherapist and transformational healer, she shared three techniques you can use to overcome obstacles you’re faced with.
1. Mentally rehearse
For example, many people struggle with public speaking because they’re afraid of messing up in front of others. However, as the saying goes: “what you think about, you bring about.” So instead, visualize a positive outcome. Imagine yourself feeling powerful on stage, delivering your message with authority, and even receiving a standing ovation!
➡️ Try It: Set a timer for 2 minutes. Begin to visualize your goal coming to life. What do you see, hear, smell, feel, and say? What outfit are you wearing? Who is there with you? The more detailed your vision, the better.
2. Use hindsight for insight
Learning happens when we “review the tape,” as sports coaches do regularly. When you’re presented with an obstacle, you can use hindsight to gain insight by taking a moment to consider what may have caused it.
For example, imagine a time when you hired a service provider that disappointed you. It’s likely there were telltale signs that this person was going to be unreliable. Looking back at this experience, what would you do differently? Would you have interviewed more people for the role, created a task round, or spoken up earlier about concerns?
➡️ Try It: Set aside 3-5 minutes to visualize what occurred. What went wrong — and was there anything you could have done to avoid that?
3. Be curious, not critical
We all have limiting beliefs that keep us playing small. Maybe you’ve said things like: “I’m not good at sales” or “No one’s going to buy what I’m offering right now, especially when so many people are tight on cash.”
You may think you need to cancel a launch because of the current economic climate. Yet, if you look around, you’ll see that many business owners are having massively successful launches!
➡️ Try It: Make a decision to move away from analysis and toward imagination. Step away from your desk, go on a quiet walk, or relax your body with some deep breathing. Prompt yourself to think creatively by asking, “What am I not seeing — and what exciting possibilities can I create?
