Today I’m excited to introduce you to Lynya Floyd, our Senior Media Coach for Impacting Millions®.
You may have gotten to know her if you were in one of my programs. But I thought we’d do a little Q&A together, so you can find out even more about how amazing she is. 💛
Q. Tell us a bit about your career in the media!
A. After graduating from Harvard, I dove right into a career in media because I have a passion for life-changing stories. I started working at the Associated Press writing pieces that were published all over the world. From there I headed into the glitzy world of magazines.
Over the course of two decades, I worked at Glamour, Essence, Seventeen and I’ve also been on The Today Show multiple times, The Dr. Oz Show and The Doctors. I’ve written freelance stories that appeared in outlets like Money, Health, and Parents.
Q. What led you to becoming a Publicity Coach?
A. I didn’t realize that people were nervous about approaching the media with story ideas. And when I became a certified health coach, I started meeting so many ambitious entrepreneurs with amazing story ideas to share—but they didn’t know how to do it.
You and I met at a dinner party for entrepreneurs and that’s when you told me how you helped others share their stories. I definitely wanted to help! I started out leading a few webinars for you and two years ago I came on to coach Impacting Millions full time. I’m incredibly passionate about working with people directly to share their brilliance with the world. Everyone has at least one amazing story inside of them and most people have dozens!
Q. How would you describe your coaching style?
A. I know that people are nervous about talking with the media so I try to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible. I’m also a bit of a rapid-talking New Yorker so you get a lot of information and advice from me in a short period of time. I’m all about getting results.
Q. What piece of advice would you give someone who’s not sure if they’re ready for publicity?
A. First of all, get support. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes information that I share with clients so they understand how the media thinks. I work really hard to make sure that the pitches students create are stellar. Second of all, take the first step— – no matter how small. Any move forward is going to be progress and get you the experience you need to snowball your small wins to bigger ones in the future!
Q. On a personal note, what do you do for fun?
A. Aren’t we all bingeing Netflix, going for long walks in the park and playing with our neighbors’ pandemic puppies? When I’m not thinking about watching Bridgerton (again), I’m working on writing a book.
